we all know that, but can't figure out why the grille looks too big compared to other debadged grilles on pre 97 bumpers.

Should be the only diffrence on pre 97 and post 97 slam panels is the vin plate.

does the grille area on the pre 97 sit higher up than the post 97?
unless your car's has a new slam panel fitted at some point.

the slam panel top is meant to be dead straight but it looks bent?

You can see its bent in that pic, its not meant to slope.
heres a new one.

You can see the holes it fits to and that it doesnt slope.
and theres no diffrencie n slam panels from 93 - 00,only diffrence like i said earlier is pre 97 the vin plate is on the slam panel and the post 97 the vin numbers on a sticker on the drivers door shut.

Your car must be dodgy or its a patter part bumper rather than oem.

Maybe the panel is actually bent and because of this it is pulling the bits where the bumper screws on inwards, making the gap smaller.
