you can converte mkv to mpeg4 hd, as for loss of quality, always gonna happen. if you had an xbox, you could stream your mkv files over the network from your pc

Yea, i think that way may lose quality, same with the ps3 video 9 conversions.
Ive done it by splitting the .mkv containor into seperate audio/video files.
Then converted each file to .mp4
Then rejoined them in a .mp4 container with the exact frame rate set so that sound is in perfect timing with mouth movements etc.
The file i made works on pc, i havent had chance to play it on the ps3 yet tho.

I tried all the converting shite out but in the end I got a copy of Nero 8. OMG it does everything. There's an add-on that comes with it called "Media-Home". You select files you want to share with your PS3 and it creates a wireless server for your PS3 to use. The great thing is it converts virtually anything to the correct formats for the PS3 whilst it's streaming so there's barely any waiting.
e.g: If I have an avi file I wanna watch on the PS3 I just select it to share and to transcode to MPEG-2 and I can then select it from my PS3's menu and it's streams in seconds. I'm loving it now, wish I'd done it sooner.
EDIT: I'm pretty certain it's compatible with .mkv files. With HD it would probably take slightly longer but not that much. I had a DVD Rip of Goodfella's on my PC's HD that was 1200mb which started streaming in seconds and didn't get cut off at all. Decent quality too.
