the only 50mm lens that will focus on the D40 is the sigma 50mm f1.4 due to the internal focus motor. the nikon f1.8 and f1.4 don't have internal focus motors hence why D40 & D60 are crap

They are hardly crap cameras. They just obviously dont have as many features as top of the range ones!

Was that via Amazon?
I ordered the same canon 50mm two weeks ago. Cost me £63 delivered and came 2 days after I ordered it.

Cancelled the order with Jessops after 2 unanswered emails 4 days apart asking for an approximate dispatch date,
then sent a message asking for the order to be cancelled and received a standard email saing : order cancelled. not very friendly
wont be using them again

Its 1000000000 times better than the kit lense
Being serious though, Canon's 50mm is super sharp, quick focusing and avaliable in 3 aperatures of 1.0 (we are talking into the £thousand), a 1.4 (around the £300-400) mark and the 1.8 (around the £60-80 mark) I recently bought the 1.8 version and its brilliant for low light shooting. The fact that the lense has no moving glass parts inside means is is set up for optimum sharpness
