How so?

If a person is going to accept a bribe, and has that mentality, then they will do so at any stage. £70k (or even half that) is a big amount if you need it or not.

If the FA dont trust someone when in this situation then they shouldnt be employing them in the first place. Its like your work suspending you after finding out you have £5k on your CC that needs paying off.

If you're in debt and need money you're more susceptible to bribery than if you're financially stable and don't have to risk losing your livelihood for the sake of a bung, common sense surely?

Yeah I do see this, but I still dont get why they should suspend him. You dont in any other jobs - if they dont trust him then he shouldnt be a ref full stop.

maybe they're using it as an excuse. maybe he put his dick in the the leader of the FA's daughter's bum and never called back. but they couldn't sack him for that so they're picking up on something that has nothing to do with them to suspend him for

I am assuming it is going back almost a century when it was quite rife I believe? Archaic approach from the FA IMO.

I must say, I also think it is a bit harsh, especially as they get about £1k+ per game they referee, so would further damage peoples financial situation.

Saying that though, as they are aware of the situation and it is now public (presumably by them?) then it is IMO sort of protecting him as he only needs to make 1 sodding howler or a few dodgy decisions and the rumours will start. That would affect him, and the team involved (players, trainers, staff, management, directors etc - the knock on effects are pretty big!) Hell, every supporter thinks that referees are against their team as it is, without something for them to use as 'justification/proof'

EDIT: Try working in banking/financial sector, some employers do and have sacked people for debts (operating accounts in unauthorised overdrafts etc). My old work-mate got his contract terminated for it.
