Is engine in or out the car?

Not sure on smoothness but if you wanan ensure reliabilty then you could perhaps change water pump, oil pump? Timing belt kit?

Change the belt you will only regret it if the belt goes and you bend all your valves...far more expensive than getting the belt and water pump sorted now.

If I was you, rather thanm taking the risk and having a massive amount of work to do a couple of months down the line suck it up and pay for the new belt, get the timing checked and you will have peace of mind for the forseeable future. i would always change the water and oil pump for new items too. Im taking it you have just bought the car with the engine in?

Bear in mind that if you dongt know the owner or how the car ahs been treated or how it has been looked after you would be better off to be very sure that everything will run nicely from the start.
