A standard M14 thread wont fit because "standard" M14 is 2mm pitch, you need an M14x1.5 iirc

No, an M14x2mm is a 'standard' metric thread. An M14x1.5mm is 'abnormal', if you want to call it that. An NPT thread is an imperial pipework thread.
