Abidal offers you a centre back if one gets injured and he's very good at it too, so if you have a left back on the bench it's a safer position to put someone fresh on, I think he's great going forward, gives the midfield plenty of options and angles for passes, teams with advancing full backs always seem to win world cups and champions league titles.

He's the best leftback in England would be a more realistic sentence though, he doesn't score, he is bad going forward and gets dragged into tackles/play that the left centre midfielder should deal with.
