my mates 1.4 8v has started to cough and miss fire in the lower revs, goes fine after 3,000rpm, and also purs out blue smoke when reved !!!!
is the engine fuked???

has he lost much performance as it looks its either the rings are shot of the valve stem seals have gone, or maybe headgasket.

blue smoke is definately oil....and as Torsa says, i suspect rings

new rings and a good honing, praps not worth it, just be as easy 1.6 16v it

£200 if possible!!! really want a 1.6 8v but a 16v is just as good!!! so how hard to fit a 16v engine?

not to hard the only major problem with them is the transponder and chip for the ecu immobiliser, is it an mpi or spi engine he has

well either look for a 1.4 or 1.6 8v bottom end (which you mite struggle with if you have lack of time), or its gona be the 1.4 or 1.6 16v,
personally i would try and look for the 1.6 8v bottom end and bolt it up to the 1.4 mpi head that he is running already. also found in novas and astras and cavs
