Windows XP won't boot normally, comes up with a blue error screen with the following error message;
*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF75179D0, 0xF8A4D76C, 0xF8A4D468)
Tried using Microsoft support which doesn't recognise the error and i've been trawling google all morning to no avail.
Can get into safe mode fine, there aren't any driver issues and no hardware showing faults or anything.
I take it a repair install of XP is my only option?

Whittie is correct, very strange that you can get into safe mode.
Which begs the question Hammer, what have you done since your last reboot?
Have you installed another piece of software?
Have you installed/updated your drivers?

Go into safe mode and do a system restore, it should have a few save points over the past few months.

It's my works pc, only reason i'm trying rather than phoning the IT guys is I broke the laptop last week so i'm making a habit of it
It's been working fine and I'm almost certain no software or drivers were installed yesterday, i'm the only one that uses it.

Tried that a good few times, which would maybe suggest hardware troubles?

heh get the IT guys on it.
Could of been a bad Automatic Update? The hard drive could of given up, the RAM might have decided that it didnt want to live anymore? Most blue screens are due to RAM issues.

you can download something like memtest
http://www.memtest.org/
burn it to CD (tis bootable) and reboot the pc with the CD in, it will bring up a dedicaetd memory testing program and run through lots of tests to see if your ram is proper fucked or not

Randomly, after the 5th time of booting into safe mode it said there was a problem with the ethernet controller. Removed and rebooted and now it appears to be working fine

Nup not unless windows update, which is set to automatic, has. Last thing that was installed was a good few weeks ago according to the system restore utility.
Don't have a clue otherwise

It's a sony vaio thing iirc, could be a faulty motherboard because the ethernet will be built in, I'd just leave it the way it is though as long as it works and you're using wireless.

How did you know it was a Sony Vaio?
Have you been installing webcams at my work again?
