sent the car to get bits done and mechanic has came back saying that he has replaced the track rod ends. What are they and how would i notice the driving if they were in need of replacing?

Turn the steering wheel to full lock to the right and get out to look at the left (passenger side) wheel.

You will see the steering rod has pushed out to turn the wheel. The end of this is the track rod end.

You'll see it's a brand new item.

You'd know if they needed replacing as your wheel would rock and you'd get klunking\ vibration when driving.
