probably more expensive than you'd pay at an auction but i'd rather buy from a shop tbh.

I have a Kona Cindercone for road/cross country riding. Can't fault it, great geometry on Konas so they handle well.

Got a Giant ATX1 DH for the big stuff but as C2rl says, go for a hard tail

What do you think of your cindercone mate? I've got one as you can see on the left. Pretty happy with it except i keep getting punctures but thats not the bike's fault! I only really do cross country and a bit of road riding in the summer for work. Its a great bike for what i use it for.

I just bought a new mountain bike in the Halfords sale, reduced from £330 to £139. Can't remember what make/model but picking it up tomorrow. Its only to get some exercise not professional downhill offroading so at that price I cant complain

You will need a hardtail.

I always recommend any Specialized within your price range - you won't go wrong and neither will it.

I am a Kona man. Had a couple now.
Got an 06 Dawg Deluxe now, which I cant fault - although it will probably fall outside your price range.
