took the old sink off and aligned the new sink up. The wash basin sits higher than the old one so now the drainage is too short. I've got the 'trap' which is bolted to the bottom of the new basin but the other end doesn't fit drainage pipe. Have a gap of about 6-7cm. How do i get it connected?

Get a 6-7cm bit of pipe and stick it in.

you can get telescopic bottle traps, Mc Alpine do them, thats what we use at work, or use 2 glued 90 degree elbows to bring the waste pipe upto the level you want
