I'm building a HTPC. It'll be plugged into the Gigabit network and sit under my TV.
I want to VLC into the machine without logging the user out. I want to see the screen on both my laptop and the HTPC. I basically want to use my laptop as a wireless keyboard/mouse, but also be able to see the HTPC screen on my laptop (in case the TV isn't on).
Any suggestions?
I'm aware of the Remote Desktop Connection DLL hack but that requires another user logged-in on the HTPC (not what I want really).
Both running Vista Ultimate.
I need it to be very reliable as having to get a keyboard/mouse out just to start the server on the HTPC will be very annoying. I just want it to sit in the task bar silently.

what exactly does that mean?
VLC is a media player, you seem to be talking about remote controlling the machine via vlc?

Why not just use a wireless keyboard? like a proper htpc keyboard?

Im guessing your pretty set on having a HTPC but have you thought about a media player instead, obvioulsy there are a few drawbacks but we have two at mine at Tvix 6500 and a Popcorn Hour A110, these are tiny machines that are silent, good looking have so many options regarding streaming and can throw anything you want at them. There is a large following of these and the firware and user applications for them are in excess, infact the Popcorn hour is on offer on ibood today,

Sorry guys, I use VLC as my media player and just typed it without thinking. I mean VNC.
I want to use the HTPC as a file server and a web server, as well as a general desktop but I have a plasma so it'd burn my screen really quickly. I want to VNC into the HTPC and use it like a desktop as well.
I won't need a keyboard or mouse very often as the basic functions will be controlled via my Harmony One remote control.
Any suggestions?

If you want a virtual desktop use Remote Desktop

ok so you want to vnc into the box without logging out the current user?
Basically before you connect with VNC you click the setting 'share desktop' or something like that. quite trivial really?

Your right pow, by default it wont log out the current LOCAL user but it will disconnect any other remote viewers unless you click share. Remote Desktop will log the user out by default.

Yeah, you have to enable more than one connection by default (security). You have to enable it.

I've just looked through the settings on Remote Desktop and cannot see any which allow the user to remain logged in.
RealVNC doesn't do a free version for Vista.
Any other suggestions?

yeah I dont think you can do it with Remote Desktop, which is good because you're asking about VNC.
I use ultravnc....see below
under Misc, share server is clicked.

I downloaded that a few months ago for use on an XP box and my Vista laptop, and it was incredibly unreliable and very annoyingly kept popping up messages saying they needed to be viewed in a non-XP/Vista environment and sort of refreshed the screen to some Win 95 lookalike. Is it working OK for you? It really got on my tits and the GUI is awful -- I designed better looking apps when I was 11 FFS.
Is that really the first choice these days?

its good free software, I use it on windows xp, 2003 no problems but no idea about vista as i wouldnt touch that with fad's 10 foot pole. So more then likely your problems with UltraVNC are down to your settings/environment not the vnc software itself
