It will say in your contract if you have one and is usually 2 weeks iirc.

If you don't have a contract then technically you dont have to give them any warning i suppose, but may be wrong with that

Just had a look on direct.gov, its 1 week, unless your contract says different

So if I hand it in tomorrow, does it mean I will still have to turn up next saturday?

Employers can't give you a bad reference anymore. They can chose not to give you one though, i think.

Does this seem ok?

Dear Philip Poyser,

I am writing to you to inform you of my resignation. As per law I am required to give 1 weeks notice, so therefore my last working day will be the 28th February 2009.

There are a few reasons to my resignation, mainly because of my personal life and how the job fits into my life. The other reasons are due to my loss of enthusiasm for the job, after working for the company for 2 and a half years, I don’t attend work with the same attitude I did when I first started. The final reason is down to the attitude of a certain member of staff.

I have enjoyed my time working for you and wish you and all the staff the best of luck for the future.

Regards,

Anthony Molyneux

Did they issue you a contract?

As by law even if they issue you one it doesnt matter if you sign it or not, as long as you dont raise and disputes within two weeks of issue its a sign of accepting it.
