mates bday is coming up and was thinking of getting him a microphone

Behringer XM8500

but do I need an amp aswell?

im shit with this kind of stuff

No offence, but that mic is a little 'Cheap and Cheapful'. If you've got the cash, buy him the industry standard Shure SM58 (last forever and can take a pounding with being dropped and what not) - can pick them up for £50/60 or so.

If he has a PA setup then you won't need anything. The Behringer XM8500 (and majority of mics) will be XLR output and include an XLR to 1/4" Jack cable.
If he wants to use it on his PC/Mac, and doesn't have a soundcard/interface with jack/XLR then you will need a 1/4" to 3.5mm jack converter > HERE <.

sort of understand what you are saying. If I get him that Mic then will I need that jack? He doesnt have anything else, only a laptop which what he will use.

Yeah, check that it includes the cable, but yeah you'll just need to get him that 3.5mm to 1/4" jack then he can plug the mic into the jack input on h is laptop.
