So my laptop is dying a painful death switching itself off when hot and just generally being slow.. Currently I have an acer aspire 5610 with upgraded ram to 4gb but still on normal xp
First question is it possible to upgrade my current laptop further? I.e 64 bit xp and CPU? Only reason I ask is because it's slightly personalised..4
Secondly what's the best laptop for about £500.. Main use would be Internet, music, movies and odd games..

Can't go wrong with Dell. Got three Inspiron 1520's in our house and they've been flawless. If we've had any problem what-so-ever Dell has just replaced whatever went wrong.
Some superb deals going about lately. I saw a Dell laptop with a Blu-ray player and a proper decent spec going for £400 on HUKD.

We buy Toshiba's at work and they all come with a roll back license so you can downgrade to XP
Enquire about this with Dell.
Or see if you choose your OS when you go to the custom build options via the dell site.

Thats the worst piece of advice ever.
I'd recommend a Dell.
No manafacturer should be shipping full sized laptops with vista anymore.

Get a Dell off of ebay.
Speaking of Apple. I'm glad that they have finally made their products ROHS compliant, the regulations have only been in place since 2006 for electrical components to be mercury free. I'm also glad they neglect to tell you how energy intensive it is to mill a solid billet of ally into a computer and re-constitute all the waste material back into more billet. Oh well, with their claims of how energy efficient it is, it might break even in about, oh 20 years.

As far as I know he's not wanting to do any obscure music editing so paying 3 times the price of an equivalent dell for something that does less is a bad idea.

Unless you are a bit of a geek then don't buy a MacBook. I use mine to fuck around with Firewalls as Windows is terrible when it comes down to networking, especially Wireless. I could have just used uBuntu but got the Mac as a Christmas present off my parents.
You pay twice the prices and then end up putting on Firefox, MSN and MS Office anyway
Good few little APs on it that you can't get on Windows mind, but then not all your Windows APs will run on the Mac.
