Bit of a strange one this! Not seen it before, and a fairly thorough Google session this afternoon hasn't helped

Sisters got a Vaio laptop with Vista, Avast AV etc. Trouble is, as soon as she downloads anything (be it a simple PDF, torrent, .exe file etc) it shows it to be downloading, but as soon as it finishes downloading, it disappears!

I have tried this in IE and FF now, and checked that it's set to save into her downloads folder in her user account, but the files are nowhere to be found. I have scanned the whole PC for the files, but not found them.

Google suggested the AV software - turned this off, no different, I found something on the Mozilla site about a tweak to what FF does when it finishes a download, tried this, and again no difference.

Starting to get confused now!!

Any suggestions? Please stfu with any jokes about upgrading to XP etc - I'm more than happy with Vista on the whole!

Cheers

Rich

Change it to save them on the desktop and give it another try, that way you can be sure its not the destination thats the problem.

download "freedownload manager" and let that manage the downloads, shouldnt delete them then.

i take it you have tried the obvious soloutions, chaging download locationg, different Browser to rule out those problems?

Yeh I have changed the d/l location, and she was originally only using IE, so I installed FF and it's still the same error. As I say, nothing on Google seems to throw up any defined reason as to why it's doing it.

Firefox has an integrated download manager, might as well have added one.

System definitely virus free?

Yup have scanned system with Avast - in all folders before the OS booted up, wanted to install Spybot S&D to check for spyware when I found it wouldn't accept downloads - installed it via USB stick after downloading it on my PC, and it just came up with the usual AdRevolver etc.

I will try the download manager, and report back

Maybe it's Avast that's the problem?

Nope as MJFF88 pointed out, I have turned Avast off and it had no effect. Not just that, it's installed with default settings, same as it is on mine and mine works perfectly. It's pretty slow to boot up too, so am wondering if there is something corrupted, or some of the awful Vaio software pre installed is causing a conflict - it's something I've not had a chance to play around with yet...

Uninstall Avast rather than just "turning it off" - any difference then?

Nope, just removed it so running PC with no AV software, then attempted a d/l and watched it like a hawk! Gets to end of d/l, then scans for viruses (not sure how as there is no AV software) then it just vanishes?!!!

Hmmm, I was hoping I'd not have to do that - It's only about 6 months old and under warranty etc etc

Semi success!...

I now have downloads working in FF - I altered a setting in about:config (something like browser.download.manager.scan) to false and it works now.

Still no luck in IE (no big deal to me, but my sister prefers using it!) - I have reset it to default settings, uninstalled and replaced with IE8, and it still does the same, gets to 100% then disappears

Could possibly be some sort of trojan horse/virus then?

One thing you could try if you haven't already is (one you have reinstalled the AV software) restart in safe mode, then do a full scan. Safe mode will only load core essential Windows drivers so hopefully no nasties will load, then when you do a virus scan you might detect something?

Also, have you downloaded and used CCleaner? ( http://www.ccleaner.com )

Thanks Sam - I am going to get Avast to run a pre boot scan which if there is anything it will rectify - I'm not hugely hopeful though.

CCleaner is installed and used once a week already thanks
