The time has come to buy a new lens.
I have a Nikon D60 body with the 18-55 kit lens.
I am looking at either the Nikon 55-200 VR, Sigma 70-300 DG APO or maybe the Nikon 70-300 VR.
Budget is upto £175 and I dont mind going second hand if its in VGC
The main reason for getting more zoom is for motorsport  Although I will still be taking all sorts of pictures with it.
What would you do if you were in my shoes?
The Sigma 70-300 DG APO seems to get very good reviews and it has a macro feature aswell which is always handy

i have been looking at 70-300 mm nikon lenses just not VR. theres a few on amazon here......

I would definitely go for the VR over the non-VR, especially if you're gonna be using it at full zoom

Ive got the Sigma 70-300 dont really use it that much, its nice and sharp and good for the money, would be nice to have VR though
I took this with it at 300mm

It dosnt have VR ? 
Scratch that plan then.
I may just stick with the 55-200VR and get a 1.4 TC

Looking at 300ish for the 70-300 AF-S VR by the look of it, although i'm sure you can get it £330ish brand new...
nevermind, £362 brand new, which is a bit off your £175

I have been offered a 55-200VR for £160 delivered including a PRO-1 polorising filter (worth £77 apparently)

so what are the gains witha VR lens than a non VR lens  (n00b)

VR is vibration reduction, so in theory means it's better for long zoom, especially if you use free hand, and no tripod

VR is really useful for long lenses, although less so for motorsport TBH.
I have the Canon 300mm IS lens (prime, not zoom) and it is awesome. I would really recommending going for the VR lens if you can afford it.
Also bear in mind that all the Combe Photos I took were with the 300mm, and even so, many of them were cropped. I would say that for a lot of motorsport shots, 200mm isn't really going to be enough.

VR is a must on anything over 200mm.
I can handhold 1/15 @300mm with my 70-300VR and still get start shots.

I had my heart set on the 70-200 F2.8 Sigma but I dont think my D60 body will auto focus on it!!
I was willing to set my budget to £450 for that as it was a really nice bit of kit.
Anything simmilar to that that may work on my body?
Or is it time to just upgrade cameras?

have you got a link to the f2.8 sigma Doug? I need a new zoom for an upcomming wedding, 200 is a tiny bit short though, I suppose I could crop

It was a second hand lens on Talk Photography Matt, They are over £600 new.

After some investigation it looks like it will work fine.
Time to keep an eye out I think
