Moving to a new flat in a couple of weeks and really want a decent aquarium, but haven't a clue what to look for. Whats easiest to maintain and cheapest to run? Not set on a particular design, but am thinking either a tall-ish (5ft or so) round one or a standard shape sunk into the wall possibly, but thats not hugely important at this stage. What are the average running costs i.e do they drain loads of electric etc?
cheers for any pointers

Nah barely any extra on the electricity and water tbh.
I would recomedn a tropical tank as a good starter. Depending on budget maybe something like this:
http://www.rocketaquatics.co.uk/rena-aqualife-original-classic-birch-tropical-aquarium-cabinet-p-922.html
The bigger the tank the more stable the environment.
For that price you get the tank, cabinet, heater and filter
Obviously there are smaller options available to you!

Ta! That kinda thing would suit me fine. Are they self cleaning and do the filters need changing often?

You need to perform maintenance on them.
For my tanks I do a quick gravel hoover every week which doubles up as a 15% water change and then every 2 weeks I clean out the filters.
Apart from that they are pretty self sufficient

open to ideas though, dont really want fish that need a stupid amount of attention or cost loads to feed etc

They are marine fish so tend not to do so well in normal tropical tanks
You could go down the marine route but you need about a grand to set up a tank of the same size after you have got all the various bits and peices

Awesome so the filters are cleanable? Bit worried about sucking a fish thru the hoover tho lol

How exactly do you plan on cleaning etc. a 5 foot tall tank Will be a nightmare for water circulation too (I'm presuming you mean one of those tall thin ones you see on ebay) also not many fish that like to just swim up and down
I'd recommend a rectangle shape one, something like a Juwel 240. I've got a deep corner tank and its a complete pain in the arse to clean and do any maintenance with due to the shape, depth and height of the bloody thing

Well i'm a bit clueless at the mo, so just trying to narrow down the options. The tall ones do look ace but I wouldnt be too happy just going up and down!

joina forum and read read read. Go to a decent shop to buy your stuff not pets at home and again ask loads.
Your aiming a bit high with the 5ft tall round tank. Start small and see how you go.

Cichlids are hardy fish but will breed like nobodies business (as I found out the hard way)
Stuff like Tetras are relatively easy and you could have a big shoal of them swimming round. Cheap to buy aswell.

Ta, not a bad idea really, saw one of those in a magazine yesterday actually. Think i'd prefer something a little bigger but for a complete noob its prob best for the fishies to start small!
