They were removed to cut down on extra bandwidth and page loading times particulary for modem users.

Also, as Adam says, you can use your avatar for any picture, and it still keeps the nice, cleam layout

We were told when Tim set up sigs that were not allowed to put pics in them! Not that anyone ever enforces it! I can understand it would be a pain with a 56k connection tho!
