hi i have just bought a 97 corsa with a 1.2 8v engine (C12NZ) for some reason wont start

when i turn the key it sounds like a drill running under the bonnet which i suspect is the starter motor turning. but the engine does not turn over could it be that the starter motor has died on me, or any other suggestions welcome

had the car on jumpleads as the battery was flat

put it into 4th and rock the car to see if the engine turnes over, if it does sounds like a flat battery
