Nice pics Luke, learning a bit of rear curtain flash are we? 
Can be tricky to get the hang of but you have exposed them really well, only thing im not sure of on the top one is the light trail running across his face, considering hes the focal point.

No rear-curtain flash. All normal.
I'm a big fan of light trails, they're all intentional but I guess they're pretty Marmite. I just think they suit clubbing pictures so well as it shows the mood off.

Oh i like the light trails i was just saying the positioning of the purple light running across his face kinda ruins the shot a little, if it was going over his head and framing him it would be better.

Manual everything (including manual flash settings).
f/3.5 at 1/60-1", ISO 100, AWB with the flash set at 24mm (diffused) at 1/8-1/16.
50D with BG-E2n, 10-20 and 580EX II (diffused).
