There is an annoying whining noise coming from the fan belt area of my car, it is quite a high pitched whistle-like/whining noise that gets louder on acceleration but can also be heard when cruising.
Ive checked the tension and wear on the belts and all is fine, so im going to start with the cheapest thing by trying replacing the fan belt.
Any other ideas what it could be? or has anyone else encountered a similar problem?
Thanks in advance

Nice one IvIark, funny stuff.
On a serious note please, I'm pretty much a noob with cars you see.

Thanks mate. Well yeah, it's probably worth trying it first and if that fails it eliminates that and I can try say the alternator as suggested above until there are further suggestions.

put a metal bar on your alternator and then put the other end to your ear and listen to see if it sounds like its coming from there

i had a whine noise as the revs built up, it was my waterpump, turns out in my 1.6 sport i had a pump for a cavalier Td and it was rubbing away at the plastic cover.

depends what engine it is, the water pump might run off the alternator belt like the x12xe so I wouldn't run the engine too long.

I will just work through the possible causes then and then that will eliminate some things. It got a bit worse last night but having heard it again, I'd say it's more of a whistling noise rather than I whine to be honest.
