is it worth looking with a price range of about 1.8k?
in my price range there high milege, around 110/120k, seems high though obviously..
wouldnt mind a 1.4 16v mk4 3 door if i could...

i loved it, all i did was put some eibach 30mm springs on it and some decent tyres. loads of people say they handle shit but i thought it was pretty good. downside to the 1.4 is as standard i dont think you can get them in higher specs e.g. sxi/sri trim so you get shit interior etc but i suppose you could buy one off fleabay and fit it yourself.

i paid £500 for insurance at 20 with 3 years ncb. servicing cost no more than any other standard "normal" car. probably averaged 35-40mpg. there are 2 versions of the 1.8, mine was a x18xe1 which was the same as old vectras (which i wanted as it meant i could get cheap parts and it has a traditional cable throttle none of this fly by wire shit). but 2001 onwards (i think?) had a z18xe which is the same as corsa c sri's and has the fly by wire throttle. the x18xe1 has 115bhp and the z18xe has 125 bhp. the difference on the road is arguable.

watch out for rear wheel bearings as i believe to change them you have to buy the complete hub assembly which costs £50-£60.

i had the 1.8 16v cdx, comes with the gadgets i.e air con traction control cruise control, went fairly well, seemed quite well built, group 8 or 9 so not too bad either i thought it handled well for a family car

Fronts are the same, about £65 each iirc.
Most modern cars have the hub/bearing all built-in so dont let that bother you.
I had to change the nsf hub on my 2.0 SRi and it was deer as it had the speed and abs sensor inside it!
Good cars, dont get the 2.0 16v though, drinks petrol and is no quicker than a 1.8 16v
Try to get one with the 'toys'. Switchable TC, trip computer, A/C, Irmscher kit etc...
Id have another Astra, just not a 2.0, either a 2.2 or 1.8

Ive heard that the 2.2s arent much cop either tbh, and that the 1.8 is by far away the best engine for day to day

The 2.0 and 2.2 are both pretty lame, unless you bolt a supercharger to the 2.2.
1.8 ftw unless you can find a nice LET one.

1.4 16v willl be really slow, a 1.4 16v corsa is just as fast as the 1.6 astra, so cant see the 1.4 being much use.

1.8's are a good engine and look nice when you get some irmscher add ons. lovely interior compared to a corsa aswell.

Nonsense.
2.0 ok maybe it's a bit cack, but the 2.2 16v is a lovely engine. Smooth power delivery and very nice torque.
But if I was to buy an Astra now that wasn't turbo it would be the 125bhp 1.8 16v.
