Are you directly involved with the financial markets? Thought you did IT?
Wouldn't have thought so really, unless you can hook a computer to go down right after you've placed your spread

I'm a trading platform developer for an investment bank.
I've been told before that i'm not allowed to trade outside of a work account but not sure if that includes spread betting.

You have to say whether you work in that sector when you sign up to ig index.
But, doubt it will stop you.
I trade on my iphone at work 
Made £420 in 1 week last week, starting with a initial £100. Kinda fucked me up a tad with the whole pound reaching a all time high though.
I'll be having another crack soon.
Basically, you buy (bet it'll go up) or sell (bet it'll go down).
Main strategy is really range trading or trend trading. You may have a edge being a insider.
I just do it on Foreign exchange markets as they move quick enough that I can make money with a small initial deposit.
I've not traded, but watched the last couple of days, and you could've made a mint using trend trading (really tight limits, riding a trend all the way up or down).
I suggest, playing paddy power trader (demo account) to get to grips with it, then watch the markets for a few weeks (maybe paper trade) to learn patterns / general trends and then put money into your account and give it a crack.
I'm tempted to give it a go tommorrow as I'll be at home off work due to my blindness.

What do you use to trade? I was looking at IG Index.
Where do you learn about all the strategies etc? I've probably got more knowledge about it than the average person but I still don't know a huge amount.

must admit it all seems like a great idea being able to make £400 a week with little initial cost

No inside info, just helping out james and helping myself out...
you decide by doing research, its called technical analysis trading I think.
