Bought an ipod nano from Amazon for the misses's birthday and now decided i need to get it engraved... Ive realised apple do this for FREE if you buy it from them so im a bit gutted. Where can i get someone to do this for me?

Most engravers will do it. Some jewellers and key cutting shops etc will do it

Or take it to an Apple Shop see what they say?

Thinkng about it they will probably say send it away to Apple.

iirc, having them engraved, even by apple voids the warranty. i was going get the ex one, but im sure it said the item couldnt be returned if faulty?

Yeah that is complete BS !

A friend of mine had his 2nd gen Nano repaired though warranty with engraving on it.

Plus my 4th gen Nano has a printed text on the back from apple as my personal message .
