Our BT total broadband is supposed to be 8MB download speed, yep, shit I know, thats why where going to get virgin 20MB, but how do I see what my actual download speed is?
When I download a film its only between 60 and 80 kb/ps  which is why I want the Virgin broadband!

That says 960 kb/s
Is that not what I should be getting when downloading a film then? I'm only getting about 80kb/s
And on another site, speedtest or something it said 1MB 
BT are fucking rip offs! Its supposed to be fucking 8MB!

Depends how busy and what kind of allowance is on the server you're downloading from mate.

If you are downloading films via torrents, bt will firstly 100% be throttling torrent traffic and you need a really popular torrent to get near 1mb/s.

I always get popular torrents!
I forwarded my port and done some other stuff, now got download speed around 120 kb/s in utorrent. Which TBH is crap!
Contract for BT broadband is up in January, I'll be getting my Mum to get Virgin broadband 20MB instead

This is where people get confused. There is a difference between kb and kB.
Broadband speeds are given in kilo or mega bits which are smaller than Bytes. There are 8 bits to a Byte so if you are being sold an "up to 8Mb (Mega bits)" connection and manage to download at 1MBps (or 1024KBps) you are reaching the maximum speed.
DannyB, if you're getting 4Mbps and paying for 2, you must live right next to the exchange or something, or somebody really likes you

Divide your connection speed by 8 to get your speed... So 8Mb or 8000Kb / 8 = 1000KB or 1MB per second transfer rate MAX.
Its a marketing thing.

I had Virgin 20Mb when i was at uni in portsmouth and should of got 20Mb (20000Kb) / 8 = 2.5MB/sec transfer rate but i never saw over 1.3MB/sec transfer rate and averaged around 800KB/s.
You also have to take into account your connection ratio. Its normally 50:1 which means 50 people are sharing the same 20mb connection... this is why broadband is so cheap now a days. Some business connections will share the connection with 20 people (20:1).

but even that won't do more than 100mbps upload

Downloading from a fast server is a much better indicator of speed, they speed tests aren't much use.

Why do people do this? Just download files you normally download from sites you actually visit... Thats your true speed as thats what you will be using your internet for.
