Right in the year and a half iv had my xe its never been tappy! put sum 15w40 oil in it ( usualy put 10w 40 in it ) and when u gave it stress for a coulpe miles it would tap!soon as it cooled down the noise would go away again

Going to work yesterday it sat at 4k for about 10 miles and when u slowed down again could here the tappits?( had the music on so wouldnt have heard them)

Anyways let it cool down ( 4 hours ) and drives home still chaping away!

so far iv

Put lifter fluid in it
Put flush in it
Put 10w 40 in it
Swaped the tappits for known good ones
put oil over the top of them started it and left it over night

Still tapping away

Mine was tapping before the top end of the engine shat itself. When I took it apart I cleaned the tappets in a degreaser bin and it's totally fine now.

I only gave them a quick wipe, didnt want to mess about with them to much cos they were fine when they came out the spare engine

Wont be as loud as this tho!

For got to say its got piper fast road cams in it but they were fitted months ago

If it didn't used to tap, and now does. It's likely oil pressure related.

To be safe, buy and fit an oil pressure gauge.
To be abit safer, clean out the pressure relief valve.

To be durex safe; change the oil pump lol

I thought about this but te light goes out rely quicky

Update!

Right riped to to bits starting from the top

New rocker cover gasket
Striped and free'd off the tappits
New valve stem seals
Skimmed the head
Head gasket

Striped and had a looky of the oil pump(fine)
New sump gasket
New oil pick up

Heres what i found

Sum of the tappits were stuck(weird cos its aneer been tappity
The oil pic up had a crack where it bolts on( out of the oil )

Started it tonight and its still sounds like its tapping its head in! any ideas

Forgot to say its well down on power sounds like its on 3

Is your exhaust manifold tight and is it a new gasket on it?

Possible that the tappets are sticking again. I used to find that alot with the 1800 16v Vauxhall engine that even after a flush, strip and clean they would still stick. Some cases you would have to work them for a good few minutes each to free them off completely.

Rather than using old tappets, i would consider buying new ones, i think they are around £7 each

Have you actually checked to see if oil is getting to the head?

Run it and take the oil cap off. If there is plenty there it will start to splash out.

not an injector clicking?

you can actually put an oil pressure gauge into the head itself to see how much pressure is getting to the head(grub screw between 2/3 cylinders on ex side)

is it still a top end tap? if had a crack in the pike up pipe you could either of killed the lifters of maybe even have a bottom end knock

Yeah there is defo oil getting to the top end! take the cap off and it spits it at u, took the cams out and theres loads of oil kickin about

IM now looking at replacing the block cos i think the small end is away

Mines started doing the same tonight
Revved it upto 5k and noticed a tapping when I let off. I got home and let it cool down. Started it up again after checking oil level, was getting 4 bar of pressure, Held revs at 3k and it cut out. Fired up again and got a bit of a chewing noise so crapped it and turned it off

Investigation to start tomorrow

Think I've found the cause of my tapping.
Checked compression and cylinder 3 is 0 Looks like i've dropped a valve.

eek you did well lol.

should have propperly cleaned the hydrolic lifters and the head in a hot de greaser bath would have got rid of any little bit of grit/metal filing's that can cause things to stick

That to me fella? Tappets were brand new. £130 from AV
