I understand you can buy GPS data logger devices which have the ability to record track times. Does anyone know specifically the legalities of such things on track days? and also what is available on the market?

Legalities? I don't see why you wouldn't be allowed to use them.
We use this one on our race car at uni:

I would have expected timing yourself to be frowned upon on public track days

Thats what im thinking. Looking at the on ed posted, it plugs directly into a standalone ecu, suppose this is the only way...

most days ban timing so you;re not trying to set a lap record on a track day, or use it as a sneaky testing day for racing, but what they don't know...

I had a phone with GPS logger software running and they didn't say anything.
I wouldn't imagine they would be able to monitor usage of such devices too strictly, they're usually very small.

Ian had RaceChrono on my N96 with him and it works really well, there would be no way of them tracking that you are using it.
Its a good bit of software and Free

Found some nice PC software to analyse the NMEA data.

the DL1 is quite expensive but the logging from it is much better than the likes of the racelogic performance box. Better resolution.
Costly though.

Depends if you need resolution.
The phone is 1Hz I think but free. Can't complaint.

I bought a DT lap timer ages ago... the IR ones that use a beacon. Yet to use it
You can DL laps to PC with it, but its just lap times... no speeds/Gforce etc.
Have a look at this thread... some logging chat -

Most of the free stuff doesn't have the resolution to produce anything meaningful - you may get lap times but then not enough data to do anything with them.
AK - That analysis example doesn't show any real conclusions. Theres gathering data, then knowing how to use it.
Theres lots of cheap books (£20ish) on data logging, well worth a read.

RCS - I never said it did
You cant really gather any useful info from different cars and different drivers. In the TS post i'm just interested in the different corner speeds round KH. (and to that extent for my posting on MLR...)

Instantaneous corner speed depends on the amount of grip available (tyres) and how much lateral acceleration the car can achieve (suspension etc) along with the actual radius of turn the car is negotiating (the line which is taken).

yes......
hence I'm comparing corner speeds.... Its clear to see for the comparisons Fee is losing a lot of time at a certain corner as she is much slower than all the other cars involved. Regardless of car/driver/tyres/susp/line/temp/weather/or if its a saturday.
Basic observations can be made.... you dont need to over analyse it.
