My Uncle works in the Dog section, Lot's more involved in that than people think also.
You've got to be a special type of person to be able to deal with some of the things they deal with.
I've spoken to him a few times, and I don't think I could do his job.

To be fair, its usually 6+years before you get into a specialist role. Obviously its a possibility after 2, but very unlikely! The work on the streets is great, thats why I joined, you get a bigger variation and still get to do your driving courses etc.
shep - I have an attachment with dogs section next week  They always seem to be soooo busy, as is traffic!

You can apply after 2 years, and thats if youve done your driving courses in that time, a lot of officers dont, depending on force, funding, number on shift etc.
Even if you can apply, its assuming theres positions, there'll be a lot of people up for the job so you'll have competition, then getting through papersift, fitness, interviews, passing driving courses etc.
It annoys me, and a lot of people on the force, when people join purely to go work somewhere else. I feel you should have to do 5+ on core before you can specialise, and get to learn your trade abit.

I always wanted to be a police man but seeing some of the shit they deal with put me off! I did apply but didn't get past the initial sift.
No offence to alex_nsm, but do you find that some officers just can't be bothered to go after what may seem petty crimes?

hmm... well I work on the railway, and have to work with the transport police but you phone them for say a fare dodger, someone smoking and they're not interested. I had a fare dodger earlier, been kicked off the train, couldn't speak hardly any english, no money - me and a colleague managed to find out he had just been released from prison from shop lifting and they're just not interested... yet they moan their hours are being cut/no overtime - yet if I deal with the local police they're top notch. I had someone suicidal the one night and whilst I tried to keep her calm it took the police ages to bother turning up  maybe it's just a transport police thing

transport police are notoriously bad for units. they are down this way anyway...
the thing is, as with anything you get times where everyone is busy or there can be major events happening that takes up police resources etc.

Oh its a difficult change to get into the mind set, besides the verbal and physical abuse youre likely to get, you see some horrific sights. Ive had one definate fatal, and one highly likely fatal (happened at end of night shift this morning and im off today so not sure if the victim has survived yet), in the last 2 shifts. Both bad RTCs with a LOT of blood, etc etc. You have to seperate yourself from it and just get on and do your job.
Yeah some officers cant be bothered with petty crimes, some cant be bothered with serious crimes, always going to be people like that in any job. Think it depends on the force, enthusiasm etc. In our force, we have whats called the diary car, where if a minor crime etc comes in and its not immediate/priority, theyre likely to get an appointment later than day/next day where by an officer will attend and deal with it. Theres an officer designated to diary car everyday. And that frees up rest of core shift to deal with the 999's etc
