That when people break down on the motorway they instantly lift the bonnet up?

Everytime I see a car on the hard shoulder, whether they have a flat tyre or their back box has come loose and dragging on the floor, the first thing they do after putting the hazards on (and some don't even do that) is lift the bonnet up!?

Any ideas?

Surely it isnt to alert the breakdown services because from the back it just isnt obvious that the bonnet is up and surely the hazards would do that job anyway?

Because some people are thick and think that all there is in a car is the seats, a steering wheel and an engine so something has to be wrong with the engine because the seats and steering wheel are still there

Blimey Alun, could of been a fire? Or did you know what could of been wrong with it? It's crazy then after they have phoned for help they go and sit back in their car When it stipulates(sp?) in the highway code, that you should stand at least 45 metres (147 feet) away from the car. Makes me laugh it does.

I didn't think you were meant to get back in, but 45 meters?

How are you meant to tell how far you are from the car anyway, keep a massive tape measure in the glove box?

No I didn't have a clue lol, but the temp gauge shooting up and then back down as it spat coolant onto the motorway should have lol. Put it this way, I now know what a failing water pump sounds like and that driving too long with no water=bye bye headgasket LOL

Maybe they think it makes them easier for the recovery truck to see them, maybe they are mechanics, maybe there is smoke/fire coming from the engine, if they're a Subaru driver maybe they have just sucked in a small child or a flying fox.

Who knows

I've never seen a car with a flat tyre with the bonnet open as well in my career.

I imagine a lot of problems people have motorway driving is overheating induced by long periods in traffic jams.
