Right I need a new desktop, want to keep it cheap, won't be used for gaming, mainly just browsing the net, storing music, playing music etc. Don't know where to start, don't want anything that will be sluggish but no ideas on specs etc these days. One i'm on would be fine but it freezes proper randomly and i've had enough of it, can't use my external hard drive on it and thats where my music is kept.
Budget is 200 quid, prefer a second hand bargain type deal so get more for money. What do people reckon?

You can pick up a decent system complete with TFT keyboard and mouse for under £100 on eBay!

Ended up getting this for £140 not expecting anything amazing, as long as its not dog slow and most of all it does crash all the time!
Pentium 4 3ghz HT processor
1TB Sata Hard Drive
2GB Ram
512mb Pci-E nividia geforce 6600 graphics card
LG DVD RW & CDR/RW,Card Reader, On board sound, Firewire card, Black Tower Case, Big CPU fan and heatsink, Internal Case fan
Currently got an amd athlon 64 processor 4000+. With 2gb ram (iirc) Will they be quite similiar in terms of performance?

The CPU in your new PC is better (3.0 GHz as opposed to your 2.4GHz Athlon).
So I'd say your new PC is a better spec than your old one, definately.

For £200 you might be better off upgrading some components.

I've bought one now, The one i'm on now crashes, I've spent ages looking into it and failed so i've moved on when I looked into ti it is possibly motherboard issues which is way out of my technical level.

I used to think that at first, it's just AMD's retarded CPU model numbering scheme!

I was under the impression, that 4000+ on an amd cpu meant the although it was say 2Ghz, it was equivalent to the power of say a 4Ghz intel cpu?
Personally I've always gone for AMD over intel until I bought my mac where I didn't have a lot of choice. I think, however, that intel cpus are alot better than they used to be.
