Hi all, we are having a problem with my sons 1.2, 8valve. When trying to start its a pig ,starts like its on 2 then 3 then 4, then you have to leave it ticking over for 30 or 40 seconds coz if you try and rev it it trys to cut out. I thought fuel so i changed the filter, blew down the lines, and in the end fitted another fuel pump, no change! so i changed the single point injector unit, no change, so then i went electrics and fitted second hand distributor, coil pack and ballast thingy!, no change, then i fitted new rotor arm, dissi cap and leads, plugs and its still the same and my son says it sems to run o.k when its running but heavier on fuel oh and to top all that we have had it to the local Vauxhall guy and he put it on his scanner and it doesn't come up with any fault, but theres something not right. Any help much appretiated, im at my end of tether!1

idle air control valve or air flow meter (if 1.2 8v's have them )

Could just be that the butterfly valve in the air intake is full of gunk

dont come with icv's is it on cold start, does it run lumpy on it? if so i would be inclined to say headgasket is starting to go...if it was coolant temp it would of picked a fault up on the scanner...it wouldnt be lambda because that doesnt affect the start up...another suggestion would be to check the ecu, unclip the bonnet cable 2 x 20 torx on the right hand side where the rubber door strip runs around 1 x phillips bolt and it comes off drop the ecu down check to see if its not full of water.

its been sugested to my son by a couple of friends that it may be the cats blocked?, so whats your thoughts on that? it is very high milage 150k plus so i suppose its possible but would that make the car very heavy on fuel? Its currently doing about 20- 25 miles to £5 fuel
thanks for any help, steve

i wouldnt say the cat blocked being the cause of it, just take it to a mot test centre, just see if they will do a emmisions test for you that would tell you if the cat isnt working correctly or not. I would still look at headgasket though

When you fitted the new pump, was it a SPi pump or a MPi pump?

if it was the cat being blocked the easist way of telling would be to get someone rev the engine and put ur hand by the exhaust backbox and see if there is pressure out of the back.
if the cat had blocked of colapised it would act as a blockage in the exhaust.

Hi all, finally got it sorted, Stu_22 you were correct it was the coolant temp sensor, which was the first thing we changed or we thought we had in fact we had changed the temp guage sensor!! we were told by a vauxhall trained mechanic it did both the guage and ecu on these but we now know it has a seperate one for the ecu, had it changed and its fine. thank god! Oh and just then the guy who did it says " you know that noise you can hear? " yes i said "its the water pump knackered and you may as well do the cambelt, kit as well another £140 quid. great!!
