If you have accepted a Job offer and signed a contract with a start date, what happens if you pull out due to unforseen circumstances?

As said - breach of contract. however, most employers would rather not have you if you do not want to be there - they would rather give the position to someone who wants to do the job, not someone there by contractual compulsion.
