if your fishing for chub iwould personally recommend fishing the bottom with a cube of luncheon meat or worm as mentioned before.
for pike i would only really recommend dead baits in the cold winter, pike become lazy when its cold so lures and spinners are not normally as effective, a roach deadbait or a sea deadbait like mackerel or lamprey will do the trick.

Cant really add to what barnshaw said mate.
Take a flask of tea or coffee with you if your out all day as it makes a big difference having a warm drink if your fishing all day in this weather

river ebro in spain is also a good shout, massive carp and catfish, alot of "all in" packages aswell where they supply everything too.

i go sea fishing a lot, usually from piers or the beach. Although im not brilliant at it, got all the gear, know the techniques and the knowledge is there, but for some reason i never seem to catch anything My best ever fish was a 5Ib Sea Bass I caught in Portsmouth Harbour. But i mainly do it to relax. And im a bit of a fair weather fisherman too

got down to the pool around 11 only had a couple of hours down there, left around 1pm because my mate was moaning he was to cold..
we only had 2 fish, a small perch but a decent roach, i would of liked to stay longer but thats how things go, going again saturday with another friend of mine, but hes well into his fishing so no moaning from him and should have a good days fishing
