Seen a few BMWs and that with them, obviously helps them drift.

But i've noticed a few FWD cars with them, any particular reason or is it just to spin both wheels simultaneously?

if you would weld a differencial in FWD you would start like a rocket, both wheels will spin together in the same speed, but on the corners car will be jumping around, and it will be useless on corners. For drag OK, but on daily driver don`t do it

Welded diff on an FWD. Great for not being able to steer.

So a limited slip diff just gives you the best of both worlds?

yeah essentailly.
A LSD will give power to the outside wheel in cornering which will allow you to get the power down but can induce understeer in a fw drive.
