What is involved with this? I fancy doing it this year.

Is it a case of I have a couple lessons with an instructor then take a practical test?

How much does it cost?

Seems to me that it's just a thing that people do so that they've got a piece of paper that says they're a better driver than everyone else. I already know how to drive safely - what does it teach you that you can't work out yourself?

I've got it, I done it mainly for the piece of paper saying I'm better than everybody else.

It paid off for my insurance this year, apart from being cheap, the IAM insurance people were the only ones who I managed to find to get driving other cars under 25.

It was a bit boring doing it tbh and most of it is common sense.

I am a better driver now though even if I don't put much of it into practice.

So what are the costs (money and time) to get the bit of paper? Is it like a couple sessions with a tutor and then a driving test?

Ahhh just noticed their website has been updated since I last looked. Much clearer now.

6 x 1 Hour sessions

Then a test. All for £140, not bad actually!

It's 79 if you are under 25 and 109 (i think) over.

It's not lessons as such, you go out with an observer for as many times as it takes until you are ready for the test.

Sorry, just checked the site, it does say £140, prices have went up then.

I didn't think about the saving in insurance to be honest. How much is it saving you?

It didn't save me that much, it was more the driving other cars which was pretty much priceless because I couldn't get it anywhere.

Under £250 quid a year on an astra sri 1.9cdti 150 though which I thought was pretty cheap.

The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) promote safe driving but at the same time making as much progress as possible. The course is fairly cheap (I think it’s around £150 with a small discount for young drivers like yourself), but thats with EVERYTHING included – lessons, test and membership. The package is called “Skills for life”.

The IAM is an organisation that runs many local groups round the country (my local one is Thames Valley as I live in Windsor, there may be a different one round here?). You join the IAM and then the local group, you pay a annual subscription to them both each year after the first year. Once you have joined the local group you are assigned an observer who basically teaches you the IAM ways. Sessions are normally 1-2 hours long, once a week. You then have a pretest and then your final test which is taken by a current or ex police class 3 driver (Traffic). I really enjoyed it, learnt a lot about country road driving and have done some pretty fun stuff with the local group as well – skid pan and a track day!
