As above really

I turn it off and then it just comes back on on its own... and as the PC is in my room it normally results in me turning it off and pulling the power plug out the back which isn't healthy for it either

Strange one, but as long as the operating system is not active ie, its in the BIOS or whatever and not on the windows loading or desktop etc, then by the mains should be ok...

Surely it shouldn't turn back on though?

When I am pulling the power as well, when i do then turn it back on, it comes up saying windows didn't shut down properly?

Where pow when you need him?

Without wanting to sound like a twat, you're not using restart by accident? e.g. On Vista what looks like the power button is standby on mine, might have changed to restart?

^^ Thats an easy mistake to make, you have to click the arrow then Shut Down

Other than that theres no real reason for it to do it I dont think....unless you are pressing the button to turn it off like you used to do in the 90's (the old 'It is now safe for you to turn off the computer')

Its probably a setting in your BIOS to do with power management or could even be something like wake on LAN?

Have a look round your BIOS for both of these and turn them off.

check it's not something simple by shutting the computer down from the command line.

Press the windows key and R together to start the run box, type in "cmd" without the " and press enter. type in "shutdown -s -t 0" without the "

If it stays shutdown then the problem is in windows, if not it's likey witht he bios

are you putting it into standby mode? might not realise this but it'll tell you in your power settings:

Control panel > power options > change plan settings > change advanced power settings > power buttons and lid

i used to put my PC into sleep/standby mode and my printer and pc would search for updates and turn it back on.

i tried turning them off but the HP auto update but it would still cut in.

now i shut it down properly.

How long between shutting down and powering up?

Its most likely 'Wake on Lan' which I think is enabled on most motherboards by default

The idea is that anything which pings or communicates over the network to your PC (i.e server, media server, playstation etc) is likely to start the PC?

This is usually disabled in bios.

It turns out it was me just being a plonker!

I always assumed that when you press start that the turn off button there was well to turn it off...

Its not is it, it just puts it in hibernate, and as I'm using a wireless keyboard and mouse as the PC is running through my TV. When I'm then putting my keyboard and mouse on the side, the mouse is picking up movement and restarting the PC...
