Suppose this should really go in here.

My old man is moving to spain for good at the end of March, he's moved out of his house and is just renting somewhere at the moment. As a result he has a Sky+ box that he has no use for.

Now, I dont have Sky at home. Can I make use of it? Can you still get Freeview throught it and make use of the record function on it, or is there some dodgy way to get more channels?

Its probs worthless but thought i'd check first.

can hook it up to a dish and get any of the free to air channels (basically anything you can get on freesat from sky - but you'll need to stick a card in from the freesat from sky website, unless it's got a deactivated card in it from a previous sky sub (I think) will still allow you to watch everything free to air. Getting all the channels like you can on cable isn't easy at all. Also the record function will not function, however you can ask sky to activate it I think possibly for a small charge.

Meh, seems like a lot of effort for little gain.

Is it worth owt to sell, or would I be better setting fire to it?

Whats with the curly bit over Spain and Portugal? And how do you get the box unlocked for recording with no subscription, that would be very useful as we only watch Freeview channels anyway!

you can plug in any sky box into an arial and get skys fressat (freeview plus additonal channels.
Sky box - If its all connected ring up sky £20 for a card and away you go
Sky+ box - as above but £10 a month to use the recording capabilities
Sky+HD box - As above but with access to Free to air HD channels i.e. BBC, ITV C4HD and E4HD to name a few.

Alternativly buy a dedicated freesat box and dont pay sky for the recording privlages

I'm in a similar reception region to southern Spain, with a 30cm mini dish. Can't get BBC, ITV or Channel four channels, but still pick up the Five and a few others. You'll need a 100cm+ to get the ones I'm missing.

best of luck getting an aerial to pick up freesat, also it's not freeview with additional channels, you get things like bbc1-4, all the itv, ch4 and five, sky 3, but you don't get stuff like filmfour on freesat from sky do you?
