It's weird because you know that you're awake but you can't move so you focus on trying to move until it happens, very odd experience.

I don't know anyone who suffers from this but it's quite obvious it's common and not life threatening.
Stop worrying about your brother and get some sleep. You'll end up cracking up...

Yeah I get this as well. Not had it recently though. The last time this happened to me, it felt like someone was sitting on my chest. Was quite scary and I'm pretty sure I didn't sleep for the rest of the night! lol

yeah that bit always sticks out the most, putting so much effort in to even move a finger its really weird, as soon as u get a movement in you snap out of it, well a big movement usually

sounds like it can happen to anyone tbh..
i remember when i was a kid about 10/11 it happened to me once.. since ive looked into it i realised it was sleep paralysis, not a nightmare.. as i seen the dark shaddow in the corner of the room.. it was making noises.. tried shouting my mum but nothing came out and the noise got louder.. eventually snapped out of it..
but atleast i know what to expect etc

Worst thing I had when sleeping was waking up and my arm was limp. It was just flopping about. Freaked me out the first time but then the feeling came back to it and it was reet. Turns out I had laid on it and cut of the circulation.

The intense feeling of fear is documented by lots of different cultures:

Ive had this happen to me from a very young age and still get it occassionly, although it rarely happens nowadays its never bothered me. When I go to sleep, I lie on my chest all sprawled out and whenever it happened to me I would wake up and not be able to move, and because I lie on my front I would be face down struggling to breathe. Used to take all my effort to just turn my head to the side.
Its never really stopped me going straight back to sleep, normally just rollover once I can move and go back to sleep, think you just get used to it. It really is a crazy sensation though, Ive told my friends about it and theyve never had it and find it quite strange.
I only found out what it was called a couple of years ago, Cant remember the last time it happened to me, probably happens more often than I remember, but as I fall straight back to sleep I dont remember it occuring.
Forgot to say its normally caused by lack of sleep or disturbed sleeping pattern and stress can bring it on. Dont think Ive ever been stressed enough, but have had plenty of years of feck all slee.
