Anybody with a Vauxhall parts catalogue able to look up part numbers (and price if possible?!) for:
C20XE Thermostat housing
C20XE thermostat
and the relevant seal / gasket please.
Autovaux seem to do a metal housing for £45ish, yet I can get a plastic one with thermostat and seal from Euro Car Parts for just over £10?!
I don't want a cool running kit, just a standard thermostat kit (92 degree?) but I can't quite understand the seemingly vast price difference.
Cheers,
Rich

Just find out what year the engine is and go to a motor factors. You won't pay more than about £15-20

I've been quoted £10 from Euro Car Parts but that's for a plastic one - I want a metal one
Oh and it's for a '93 plate one - I know the reg of the donor Calibra

plastic one?
as alan said, they are quite cheap from a motor factors. probably be a few on ebay anyway. i wouldnt really worry about buying a genuine gm one tbh.
edit.

arse they are all cool running ones on ebay. im not a big fan of the cool running ones. i like things to actually get up to temperature.

Yeh looking at the photo of it, it appears to be a plastic housing? That's a Calorstat one.
eBay only seem to have cool running ones atm which I don't want, so kind of come to the decision that it would have to be a GM one.
No idea what's fitted to it atm, but its metal, leaking, and been attacked by coolant quite badly - also replacing it as its the final thing to change to see if I can get better mpg from it (240 miles to a tank carefully driven atm)
Edit: Yup cheers for the link Nic - that's the only ones I could find, and yes I'd prefer to have it running properly rather than being made to cut in too early.

get to your local motor factors and get one from there. seriously doesnt need to be a gm part.
and also, when fitting, even though it comes with a black o ring, go round it with sealant aswell. just incase sometimes as they leak even when new, due to surfaces perhaps not being an even match.

Yeh I'm not fussed about it being a GM one, just want it to be a metal housing, whats yours?
Definitely prefer the price of a motor factor one
And cheers for the tip

Yeh I've been quoted £10 for a Calorstat one, may run the risk.
Cheers for your advice

Not sure, will see how brave I'm feeling once I've had a read up in the Haynes manual.
I've got a long old list of bits to fit / replace etc (most of it's on it's way to me now) that I was hoping to get Jamie @ Lemass to do for me, but to do all of it will be way more than a days work for him so I'm going to see what bits I can do myself.
About time I learnt to do some of it
Good news about your arches mate

Same as Nic, I've got one from a motor factors. I got a QH one (the brand with the dark blue boxes with the red stripe on them) and it's done me fine so far.
And they're a piece of piss to do mate. Just a case of:
Flat blade screwdriver to remove the jubilee holding the top hose on it.
10mm socket with a decent extension, if memory serves me I don't think you'd be able to get into the back one of the three bolts with a spanner to remove the housing. It's pretty easy to get at though.
Then just bolt up the new one, being careful not to over tighten it and break one of the lugs off like I did (dodgy casting is my excuse) lol.
Then just screw the top hose back on and that's you done.
You don't need to touch the coolant temp sensor or the temp gauge sender since they're in a seperate bit bolted to the head. If you decide to give it a go let us know how you get on with it - if you know how to at least hold a spanner you'll be fine though.

Cheers Alan, that does sound pretty straight forward I'm able to hold a spanner and socket, so should be ok!!
Nic - Yeh it is which would I be right in thinking could just be the seal? As said though, I want to replace the whole thermostat and housing for a variety of reasons though. It's leaking all over my new sensors atm too

now explains the 45 quid price tag. buy new if you want but yes it will be the seal. if you want to try the cheap method, just remove it, cover the area of the seal in some sealant. re fit it. see if it stops.

Aha, when I said about the housing I was getting mixed up. Meant the actual thermostat instead.
I'd try a new gasket mate, unless it's been fried there's no reason for the housing on it just now not to be fine.
