Alright peeps, dont normally shout for help but im stumped..

Trying to install message queuing service on Server 2008 R2.. Normally you just click Turn Windows Feature on or off.. then application server etc etc..

For some crazy reason when clicking on it a basic Server Manager screen comes up. With no options for windows features..

its a virtual machine if that helps. Is there a shortcut that will bring up *JUST* the feature list ? As so far all the places i look end up at the same bloody Server Manager screen.

any help please guys n gals

slight amendment to that..

its not Server Manager screen that loads its actually Disk Management that comes up

You trying it through Server Manager > Add Features > MSMQ Services?
You could also look at commandline, from what i remember you can enable/install it via the ServerManagerCmd.exe, something like "ServerManagerCmd.exe -install MSMQ-Services" should do the trick - although double check on MS TechNet site...

ok after a bit of digging it seems to be "optionalfeatures.exe" but sadly doing control appwiz.cpl,,2 comes up with the following error

Windows cannot find "optionalfeatures.exe" make sure you typed the name correctly and try again

GRRRRR WTF is it !

I know you can install by command line on older releases of Windows server.. Does this work for 2008 ?

yeah believe so, check out TechNet - http://technet.microsoft.com

btw, ocsetup.exe is the optional component setup if that's what you're after

If Server Manager isn't playing ball with you and its a virtual machine, then its usually down to insufficient or mismatched resources.

It could be that stupid SVGA bug that we had in our 2008 VM's as well that was causing erratic behaviour.

Server 2008 doesn't get on too well virtualized (like on Virtual PC or Sun VirtualBox)... Seems to be find on Virtual Server though

It does get on well with ESX once you've hardened the boxes and killed loads of resources that always ask for CPU time - and you've done the svga bux fix.

We have to start using 2008 for everything now as Server 2003 is going EOL and entering the extended support phase in June this year
