helicoil will be fine,
a helicoil is stronger than the thread it replaces,

Do you have any idea of the thickness of metal that the helicoil would be going into?

How are you going to helicoil it? There's nothing for the helicoil to bottom out against, it'll be loose in the hole.

not if fitted right, i put helicoils in through holes every week at work.
wind it in and snap the bottom off.
won't come out.

What is stopping it from coming out the hole? And how is it going to 'catch' enough to snap the bottom off?

Any reccomended sets or places to get them? Ideally just want the tool and the size of helicoil I need rather than buying a set as it'll likely never get used again

Heli-coiling will be the best method.. I know it's not about cars, but i work in a bike shop(currently) and we use helicoils on stripped threads all the time. Works a treat! And stays in place due to the pressure on the threads it holds glue.

I still don't think the drum would even be thick enough unless you used a short arse helicoil

you can shorten the helicoils,
also they're should be enough meat in it, because it's tapped in the first place lol
