Hey guys,
When I get some time, I really want to make a iphone game.
Essentially the game would be a car tuning game... with 'drag strip (yawn)'...
Where you buy the car, buy the parts, tweak the car...
Then go race it at the drag strip to see what 1/4 mile time you do.
Usual affair of basically racing against other cars to win money, which then allows you to mod your car more... in a later version it'd have player vs player racing, so I could race you in my car. For the start however there would just be a top times leader board for power class.
Here's the deal with this though, the tuning would be in depth. Like you could modify loads of things, so half the skill would be 'tuning the car' / trying out tuning ideas etc. You essentially do your changes and then run the car on the dyno to see if you improved or decreased performance.
Only thing is, if you do something really stupid you end up risking blowing the engine to pieces. e.g. if on a standard bottom end you choose to raise the rev limiter to 11,000 rpm and then thrash it, the car will probably blow up. but if you've got the right bits and it's tuned correctly it'll allow you to do that.
This basically gets to a case of where you try to find the limits of what is possible, e.g. at the start you'll have no money, so you'll need to be clever to get the performance to win the races at the strip.
Things I think should be changable are:
Engine block (capacity / cylinder count / stroke etc)
Cams duration etc.
Exhaust
Exhaust Manifold
Intake
Filter
ECU mapping
Fueling / Engine timing ...
Pistons
Valves
Crankshaft
Flywheel
Clutch
Transmission ratios
Turbo
Supercharger
Suspension
Wheels
... Can anyone else think of anything else that should be changeable?
I'm basically gonna get the old textbooks out on engine tuning maths, to work out what gains and loses power etc...
The racing would be done on a 2d side scroll view, where you have a throttle on the right, and a gear shifter on the left.
Opinons / Ideas?
Just something I've fancied making for a while.

Sounds like the Renault 1/4 mile drag strip flash game. You sign up and play against other members. More wins, more credits you get to splash out on tuning parts (NOS, turbos, chargers etc). Would post a link but they got rid of it.
Although i remember decompiling the flash and changing the car to do a 1/4 mile in 0.1 secs

afaik there's nothing like this on the iphone at the moment is there?
I'm considering using a farmville style system too...
e.g. ... Game is free. You don't have to pay a penny...
but you can exchange real money in game for game cash... like $1 = 1000 credits.
where normally playing the game to earn 1000 credits may take you a few hours. So it's up to you, either slave away to earn some credits to buy some cool stuff, or just spend a couple of dollars to be able to make a good car.

Are enough people interested in more in depth tuning?
Are iphone hits not stupid things that you pick up and shake the iphone or blow into etc?

true john... thats the problem...
I kinda want to build it for my own interest and learning the engine tuning maths... but yeah gameplay would suck
