From autoexpress site..........
........There have been a few sleepness nights at Vauxhall. The firm's engineers finally completed the sensational Lightning concept at 4am on the day of its unveiling. We brought you the first details of the car in last week's issue. But with the paint still drying on its sleek body panels, Auto Express was once more on the scene to get an in-depth view - and these exclusive pictures.
With its striking profile, penned by designer Simon Cox - who was also responsible for Cadillac's XLR - at GM's Advanced Design Studio in Coventry, the concept will be developed into Vauxhall's next high-performance flagship, and replace the slow-selling VX220.
The car is finished in gleaming silver with a striking red and black interior, and the sharp lines are designed to enhance the firm's V-grille. Details hark back to Luton's last concept, the 1978 Equus, including those aggressive bonnet vents. On the front wings, polished silver panels - engraved with a Union Jack to emphasise this is a British creation - are hinged to allow the doors to open. The Lightning has been built to celebrate Vauxhall's centenary, and marks a move towards more exciting, sporty products.
GM chief Rick Wagoner cheekily described the past 100 years as "a good start", adding: "Two years ago, Vauxhall didn't do its job of producing exciting products properly. The VX220 was proof that we could do it, and now we are going on to the next stage." Opel design director Martin Smith said: "This car has been designed from the outset to be a distinct Vauxhall, with the V-grille incorporated into the front end.
"This is something we will see in the future, starting with the next Astra. All Vauxhalls will have a different frontal style which will make the V-grille more pronounced." The Lightning is based on the Pontiac Solstice concept revealed at the 2002 Detroit Motor Show, and is expected to go on sale in 2005.
Power will come from a 2.2-litre engine - turbo or supercharged - while a range-topping V6 or even a compact V8 are being considered. The roadster will offer better value than the VX220 and should appeal to a wider market. Prices will depend on final engine choices, but bosses are aiming for the sub-£20,000 mark, with flagship versions costing around £23,000. That will undercut the car's Honda S2000 rival by £3,000.
Rick Wagoner used the launch of the Lightning to confirm that the next Astra will be built in Britain at the Ellesmere Port factory in Cheshire. Chris Thorp
