Because you will be paying them money monthly for a service, and they want to know if your capable of paying it off.

But it's like TV license etc... they don't need a credit check. It's generally if you receive goods in advance.
Admittedly you're recieving a service but if you don't pay for a month they can soon cut it off with no real hassle.
