right my g/f has got a genuine copy of windows 7 home premium, i formatted my laptop and put it on, all was fine until i downloaded the updates for it and now it says its not genuine, even though it is and is being used on her laptop
it also says something about its an upgrade copy, does that mean im going to have to find another copy of vista to put on my laptop (my laptop came with vista and i have a key) and then just update my laptop?

no, your copy won't be legal as well, you have to pay for it too

Legally, no.
However, you could try formatting again and going through the phone activation

Did she purchase a retail copy of Windows 7? If not, even if you uninstalled it off the other laptop - it wouldn't work or activate as the BIOS in your laptop doesn't have the key in the SLIC table applicable to the license.
If you bought the retail copy and tried the phone method, the next time the other machine talks to the activation server, it will see different hardware and tell that machine its not genuine.
It probably didn't flag up because it first tried to activate when you connected to.
The only proper way to get around activation is by using an OEM key and doing the SLIC spoofing method using a bootloader.
