Well I might have a swap sorted, got a phone call from a lad in south wales with a 2002 plate pheonix yellow one with a load of extras, full BMW service history and only 56k miles. Will just need to wait and see whats what I guess.

I done a Saturday morning sprint to go & look at/buy a Pheonix Yellow which I'd seen on AT the Fri night, it was at Peter Vardy in Edinburgh when I get there the salesman said it had been sold within 2hrs of hitting Autotrader & that he only wishes he had another 5 of them to sell due to the response!!

OK the car will be used by the wife as well as myself and shes dead against the SMG as she said she wont like it.
How reliable are they???
Is it the paddle shift or just tap the gear lever up/down???

i would steer clear of the SMG IMO. Too many problems, too many expensive bills and manuals are for real men

SMG II is fantastic & easy to use & I havnt heard of anyone having problems with it except on very high mileage / abused cars with a pump needing replaced.
You can either change up/down with the paddles or with the stick tip-tronic style. Or if you cant be arsed with gear changes on the way through traffic to work just bang the stick to the right & it will change for you.
I didnt think i'd like it but 20mins convinced me otherwise. I would find it a backwards step going back to an old gear shifter!!
