I always thought that if you Had a spare it needed to be in a working condition. Similar to seat belts if you have no rear seats but have rear seat belts you will fail etc

nah, condition of spare tyre, or if there is one is not part of the mot. you can and most likely will get an advisory if its bald/deformed etc. it cant fail for a spare.

however your spare must be the same size as the wheel on the same axel otherwise it will fail. e.g front both same size. and rear both same size

I used to be an MOT Tester and we never checked the spare, but if it has a spare and its baldy they can advise it, if it hasnt got one then they cant fail you as your not required to have one. Im sure Clio 182s come without? And possibly a few other cars. But chances are they wont check so just leave it out incase they do.
