But not 100% sure wich is the best combination, so just looking for a bit of advice,

Sbd say the c16xe head is good but z16xe head has the best ports, and the x16xel bottom end is the best to use. but i've read that the z16xe head doesnt fit the x16xel bottom end, Is this true?

C16XE block with the X16XEL head is the best combo, also found on SBD's website

quote:

1.6L Cylinder Heads

We recommend the either the head from the early GSI (see picture right), this has the larger oval port size with a slight raised arch in the middle or the later triangular ported head (see pictures above). The 1600cc cylinder heads with the triangular ports are found on the X16XEL engine from the Astra/Zafira from 1998 to now. In tests we've found this to be as good if not slightly better, any other heads are not as good even after being ported due internal shape.

Wouldn't really matter, I'm using an X16XEL engine with C16XE loom/ecu.

so is there any point using the c16 head on the astra engine, or just use the whole astra engine?

Depends what you want really, as said in SBD's website the best head is the X16XEL (plonked on the C16 block) even after p&p due to internal shape, but it wont really make much of a difference especially that you would notice to a C16XE head or what ever head you want to use.

Also it depends what power you're going for, if you're going to leave it standard, or just some cams and a remap I would use the C16 as it has more power to start with, if you're doing what I'm doing and not leaving anything standard then go for the better combo (C16 block X16XEL head) as it would probably compliment it better (cant really argue with SBD's facts) and may squeeze an extra couple of bhp out of the engine if you're doing a full rebuild.

Like I say though, if you're just after power straight out the box c16xe with cams/map/inlet/exhaust mods, if you're chasing serious power from a small block the C16/X16XEL combo may be a better choice, but trust me when I say its fucking expensive, I've spent £2000 and all I've got is an engine, high compression pistons, conrods, inlet manifold and some odds and sods to freshen up the engine.

thanks for the info m8, 2grand, i wont be going down the piston route ect just yet so think i'll go for a full c16 set up as i can still use my dbilas inlet and exhaust manifold on it and i'll get some fast road cams a remap and set up then.
